The stadium has been the home ground for the Bundesliga club Leverkusen for over 50 years. The team started in the year 1958.
The original name of the stadium was Ulrich-Haberland which was changed to Bay Arena in the year 1998. Besides having a wonderful hotel, the stadium also has a rooms and a restaurant with a wonderful view of the Stadium.
During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the city was to bid for the matches; however, looking at the low capacity, the city withdrew its bid. This facility was made the primary traning Centre for the German National team; however, Jürgen Klinsmann preferred the Berlin stadium instead of the Bay Arena.
The stadium was renovated in 2009 and the cost of renovation was 70 million EUROS. The Architect for this project was Max Bogl. Stadium in the present form can accommodate 30210 fans. Originally the stadium could house only 20,000 fans only.
Bay Arena also is one of the proposed locations during the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in Germany.
