Nadeshiko Japan
Japan is yet another team which has been part of the every single World Cup played thus far. 1995 was the only year when the team went past the group stages and played the quarter finals. In the quarter finals, they lost to the United States 0-4. "Nadeshiko Japan" (nick name) have been Runners up of the Asia Cup five times (1986, 1991, 1995, 2001, 2008), but have never been able to lift the Cup. A place in the quarter finals of the 2008 Olympics was their best performance at the Olympics even though they have qualified three times including the 2008 Olympics.
Japan is ranked Fourth by FIFA as on March 2011 which AFC feels is going to be difficult to maintain as North Korea and China are making rapid improvement and are being considered as Asian Powerhouses. The team is banking on Kozue Ando, the sensational Mana Iwabuchi ( was voted as the Asian Young Footballer of the Year in 2008), Aya Miyama and the ever so popular Homare Sawa (166 caps and 75 goals).
Japan is in group ‘B’ along with New Zealand, Mexico and England. They would be playing their opening match on 27th June against New Zealand at Bochum
