"The Matildas"
The “Matildas” as the team is popularly called is coming for the World Cup with an Asia Cup title under their belt. It’s the first ever Asian Cup title for the team where they beat North Korea, yet another Asian Football giant, in the Penalty Shootout. In their first appearance at the Asian Cup, they were Runners Up behind China. The Australian team has also won the Ozeanienmeisterschaft or the Oceania Cup four times. They went down 1-2 against Sweden in the 2004 Olympic Quarter finals, however, they failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympics.
Except for the first edition of the World Cup, the team has been part of every single edition of this prestigious Cup. The team has yet to get past the group stages at the World Cup. Attacker Tameka Butt and goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri are in exceptional form. However, other team members have to chip in for the team to display better results in this World Cup.
The team is placed in Group “D” along with Brazil, Norway and Guinea with their opening match with Brazil. They for sure have a mighty huge task on hand as Brazil is a strong contender of the World Cup.
